Come back of Grandmas Kitchen Pantry

The Pantry is making its come back as people are beginning to horde food. It not because the Kitchen Pantry is so stylish as it is more about the recession and how people are dealing with the uncertainty of jobs and the current economic conditions. I the old days it was not uncommon to go into the kitchen pantry and find canned jars of food such as peaches, tomatoes, pears etc. You could walk into the pantry and see shelving sacked full of canned foods home made and store bought. It was the rainy day. My old farm house does not have that little room for an actual pantry but we have room to try to create storage for a pantry like environment. The pantry I want to design would be right off the entrance to our home. It would still be out of site from guests coming and going

Building my own Pantry

I often wonder what actual words mean so I look them up in my desk side dictionary to get the actual definition. I also wondered how Webster’s dictionary defined the word pantry. It defines the word as: “A room or closet in which food or dishes are stored”. The work now begins with the design of the pantry. So, a pantry works for storing food for a later time. I guess it’s safe to assume it a kitchen pantry because it leads off the kitchen.

I of course need to consult the boss before I begin the project. I decided to take the wife aka boss to Lowes and some other places and see what was readily available to help design this kitchen pantry. I could design it my self but it would be permanent and we may be able to find something less permanent at a lower price. The room we are going to use has our chest freezer. We like to freeze what we get at the end of the year and it usually lasts us for the entire year. Deer is so much leaner than cow and with the number of deer being hit with vehicles and laying on the side of the road it wouldn’t be a bad idea to have two seasons for a couple of years. We also like to freeze strawberries. If freezing strawberries it is ideal to cut them up rather than freezing the whole as they will bruise when they are de-thaw. This is some of the things we have kept in mind when creating our pantry and how we wanted to use the additional space.

I ended up building some shelves to sit high enough to open our chest freezer door and low enough that it would have easy access. My wife decided to purchase two armours that miraculously fit into the room we were designing. The first armour was large and we could hang some jackets. However we purchased some plastic storage units and piled them inside the amour. This really beats building cabinets that can not be removed after they are installed and they don’t look bad. We ended up purchasing most of this stuff for to design our pantry from Wal-mart.
