Advertising With Car Stickers

Car stickers or bumper stickers started appearing on the back of vehicles shortly after WWII and is often attributed to Forest P. Gill a silk screen writer. Some people would actually hang signs by wire from the back of their car. However, Forest was able to create and adhesive to place a “sticker” or sign on the back of the vehicle. This great idea would slightly change the ability for the average person to advertise.

Americans have loved their vehicles and of course have always loved giving people and other countries their opinions and thoughts; expressing their opinion right down to dumping tea in a harbor or bombing another country because they believed the country attacked them or would attack them. It is no wonder that bumper stickers or car stickers are used to express or even force their thoughts, opinions or views about everything when you are driving.

The amount of money spent on advertising is huge and car stickers are only one avenue for which people advertise their support or dissent about something they believe in. Foreigners can tell American democracy is in full swing around election time by the amount of bumper stickers which is placed on back of a car supporting the person they would like to see as president or supporting which party they would like to see controlling the congress or Senate.

Stickers placed on vehicles also support groups people belong to. You could see a sticker that supports VFW or Veterans of Foreign Wars to stickers supporting you local police, Shriners or a Masonic lodge. The ability to show your support to local groups and like minded people can be a way to create relationships if the person is in the position to discuss a car sticker they see on someone’s vehicle. Unfortunately in opposition to building relationships someone advertizing their support for religion or having a sticker on their car that says they support the NRA, abortion can create a quick divide against a stranger and often start an argument before the person ever has a chance to say hello.

Humour in Bumper Stickers

Although these stickers are used in to express political views or show your support for certain political agendas they also can be used to express the drivers humor in life. Anyone that has been driving for any period of time has inevitably come across the car at a stop light or parked nearby at a grocery store that has so many stickers you could spend an hour reading them. Some of the funny stickers I have come across say things such as my “kids an honor roll student at abc school”. Now some people think big deal that cares other than you that your kid is on the honor roll. However, I did laugh the first time I read” My kid beat up your honor roll student” or the sticker that said “my son was inmate of the month at abc county jail”. I also read one the other day that said: “If you love high unemployment , no jobs and high taxes you’ll love Michigan” In the end for a couple of dollars you or anyone owning a vehicle can express their opinion by purchasing and placing a car stickers on their vehicle.
